He was the second oldest of thirteen brothers and sisters. He was the first of his siblings to take the journey to America, many of them would soon bravely follow. He was working in different states as a “bracero” a farm worker.

Devoted husband of the late, Alejandra Avila. Cherished father of Ángeles Bárcenas, Alicia Avila, Jorge Avila, Adriana Figueroa and Gerardo Avila. Also, Elisa Avila Ibarra and Mari Avila Ibarra.  Proud grandfather of  Fabián Bárcenas, Alexandra Bárcenas, Iliana Bárcenas, and Tristán Bárcenas (Ángeles Bárcenas), David Scott, Kevin Scott (Alicia Avila), Nicholas Avila, Emily Avila (Jorge Avila),  Isabella Figueroa, King Figueroa, Alexander Figueroa, and Emma Figueroa (Adriana Figueroa), Daniela Avila, and Gabriela Avila (Gerardo Avila). Herminio Avila and his late wife were owners of Avila’s Bakery for over 20 years, in the north side of Chicago. Baking and selling delicious Mexican breads like Conchas, Bolillos, Pan Fino, cookies and other delicious Pan Dulce. They made cakes for birthdays to weddings. The business and the home were in the same location. It   was a wonderful, hectic, and busy time, raising a large family and growing up together.

Papa was a caring man, had a mild temper, enjoyed working in the bakery. The wonderful smell of fresh baked bread, was always welcomed by everyone. He was supportive of his family and friends.

Traveling to Mexico to visit family and friends. His first job was as a farm worker, and he had many jobs in between.  His last job was working as an Election Coordinator for the City of Chicago, which he did until March 2020, he did for over four years. He enjoyed seeing voters and they looked forward to seeing him. He said they were his friends too.

He was a great father, caring person, and will be greatly missed. He will be remembered for his kindness towards strangers and caring person to many people.

He cared about his community. He enjoyed having pets around him. Apa is in God’s hands now and not in pain from his illness anymore. We were blessed with a wonderful father, who had a great heart. Thank you from his loving family. May he rest in peace.
