Pilsen neighborhood: Fidencio Gonzalez-Madrigal (1944 – 2019)

Fidencio Gonzalez was a loving human being. Born to Epifanio Gonzalez Garza and the late Santos Madrigal on December 12, 1944. His angels in heaven called him home on July 27, 2019 at the age of 74. He passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospital in Chicago, IL with family by his side.

“Don Lencho,” as he liked to be called by friends, wore many hats: Hijo, Hermano to 11 brothers and sisters and their spouses, Tio to 18 nieces and nephews, 17 great-nieces and great-nephews, Amigo to everyone, Dad to his sons, Daddy to his daughters, Grandpa to 42 grandchildren, and Great Grandpa to 15 great grandchildren, Farmer, Landscaper, and Grower of Life.  Fidencio placed each hat on his head with pride and wore it with open arms and an open heart.

Fidencio loved his parents, his children, his grandchildren, his great grandchildren, his siblings and their families. He valued his friends and neighbors and worked daily tending to his garden on 17th street. He passed his days sitting on his porch talking to family, friends, and strangers, or you could see him sitting by his garden scratching bingo cards, drinking coffee and on the phone. As people passed to admire his life’s work, you could hear his music in the back ground as he cultivated and watered his garden. On occasion you would hear him serenaded his pets Paloma, Bowser, Sasha, and Bagira, who were always nearby watching and protecting over their Grandpa Lencho, who loved life.

Fidencio fought to the end. He lost his battle with Lung Cancer, but he did not suffer any pain. He allowed the strongest and best part of him to choose when to go; his heart. Our Gardner in heaven may you bless us with your strength and may your garden be as great as the one you left behind. God speed.

Tio Lencho, although I wasn’t able to see you much due to distance, one thing I’ll never forget is that you never let your smile and laugh go, I could hear you and Adelaida laugh all day as y’all sat outside of Welitas house in the rocking chairs. From tequila talks to just a good story, there was always something positive about your ambience. It would really help mom alot when you called as well, it was great hearing your voice, and being the bigger brother i’m sure you were part of her foundation. Although there’s really not much i could bring out to say at this moment, I hope you lived on earth well and will continue to protect us from above with Welita and Tio Demetrio. We miss you.

Hello Dad,

I just wanted to let you know that you were the hardest working man I’ve ever known. I remember having to take off your dirty boots almost every day growing up. It didn’t matter to me because, I enjoyed those moments with you I also, remember having to make you favorite salsa everyday as well. You are a one of a kind dad that had a mix of love, kindness, patients, and always spoke from the heart and never held back your true feelings. You are a true healer in life and rest. I will forever speak to you through my heart and prayer. I Love you so much dad..
Love Your Daughter Letty.
