Erlinda Mendoza, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend passed away peacefully in her Chicago home on Monday, November 25th at 76 years old. Erlinda was born on January 17 in La Puerta de Jaripitiro, (Huaniqueo, Michoacán de Ocampo, Mexico) to Ismael Madrigal and Elvira Zavala. She was married on January 5, 1958 to Fidel Mendoza. They moved to Chicago, IL in 1967.

Erlinda worked part-time at El Hogar del Niño before entering the labor force at Halo/Cooper Lighting. She was a pillar of her community, and her kitchen was never closed to those in need. She loved her Pilsen neighborhood and was often found taking long walks in the neighborhood.  Those lucky enough to encounter her knew just what a social butterfly she was. If you weren’t already a friend, you quickly became one.

She and Fidel firmly believed in the importance of education and hard work, and they devoted their energy to ensuring her children were always safe, well fed, and attended school every day.  Their examples of tireless determination led all six of their children to obtain degrees of higher learning beyond high school.

Her elaborate stories, paired with her wonderfully expressive face, brought to life tales of her hometown and family history. From sprained ankles to dislocated joints to tummy aches, Erlinda was known to have a home remedy and the healing touch for everything and her friends and family frequently went to her before any doctor.

One of her favorite pastimes was being creative on the sewing machine, making clothing for herself, her family and others.

She was a devoted grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her 13 grandchildren and is remembered fondly by them for her ability to always have something cooking on the stove.

Erlinda is survived by her husband Fidel Mendoza, her five children Jose (Sandra), Magdalena, Batlazar (Gabriela), Salvador (Mia), and Jesus, and 13 grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her daughter Socorro.

She will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all who were fortunate to have.
