In Memorial

Cheryl Lynn Yerges (nee Peterson) Age 73 of Downers Grove, Illinois passed away peacefully at home on hospice care on Saturday, November 19, 2022.

Cheryl was born in Sioux City, Iowa.  She graduated from East High School in 1967 and attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where she attained a BS degree in Nursing in 1971.  She began her nursing career at University Hospitals in Madison, Wisconsin.  She began working in the Trauma and Life Support Center, and then moved to the Intensive Care Unit.  She was selected to develop and implement a home care peritoneal dialysis program to serve the remote regions of Wisconsin, and to teach patients the safe and appropriate use of the complicated machines available at the time.  She then taught in the School of Nursing, introducing students to clinical care in the hospital.

Cheryl met James Yerges in Madison.  They married in 1973 and were together for nearly fifty years, until her passing.  They moved to Downers Grove, Illinois in 1986, where Cheryl was active in the local PTA, a champion for charitable causes, and a renowned hostess for family and friends.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents Victor Peterson and Adelaide (nee Gunderson) and her stepmother Jean Moe.  She is survived by her husband James, daughter Laura Yerges-Armstrong, son-in-law Jason Armstrong, granddaughter Kaylee Armstrong and brother Victor Peterson, along with a loving extended family including step-sisters, in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be planned for a later date.  Cheryl was known as the ultimate hostess and prided herself in making welcoming meals for family and friends.  In lieu of flowers we encourage you to share the gift of a meal for those in need by clicking: World Central Kitchen  or to the Downers Grove Area Fish Pantry

So very saddened to receive the news of Cheri’s passing. We have known one another practically since birth. All thru school, church and living one block apart all those years. Thank you for including me in this notification. I shared it on Facebook in our class of 67 post. Many remembrances were posted. May your earthly journey to heavenly journey bring you peace. And peace be with your family at this time. 🙏

Hey big brother. We’ve spent many hours talking and I know I have still not adequately expressed the great love I’ve always had for both you and Cheryl. I loved our trips into the city for dinner and the latest theater production. Such great memories and good times. See you in April and will have lots more love to share.
