Woody…an icon for 3-4 years as Rockford Boylan…as Dr. Mike McGrail reminds us, the only running back in Boylan history to start as a sophmore, and set records that year and every after he did…he was our star…bigger than life..he was revered in the halls and on Friday nights…probably so many accolades and adulation that it impacted his later years…when the accomplishments distanced themselves from his efforts to live a life…I remember his journey on a full ride to Illinois State, his efforts to fit into a bigger world, where his incredible, unsurpassed talents from high school became equalized with other talented players in college…he didn’t like the bigger crowds…taller buildings…leaving his loved ones in Rockford…he was lonely….he was in love….he wanted to go home, and who could fault him for being uncomfortable in less inviting environments…

He had a great work ethic…a great smile…an infectious laugh…and an indistiguishable “Woody like” look as he walked across the quad at ISU…as he ran across a field of any sort…as he entered a room…We knew him well back then…we understand he suffered since…and feel guilty distance and life separates so many of us that wish we could have been helpful, even as we understand those closest to him, loved him unconditionally, could only do so much as well…

He’s got his speed back…his energy….his clear thinking….and is sprinting, laughing and as effervescent as he was in his youth, once again…he’ll help many now…he’ll be happier and held closer to his preferred comfort state…

We honor Woody…we’ll miss him…but his death ends his life, not all of our relationships we had with him…reflect on him…meditate on him and however he touched your life…and wish him well in his eternal rest, for he’s our angel now…and he’ll be a great one…God Bless Woody, #6….his entire family…and legions of friends and fans throughout…

Well said for many of us Mike. For a guy that could really hit somebody, he was a gentle soul.
